AHIMA HIP Week 2025: DataGen’s HI Heroes

AHIMA HIP Week 2025 DataGen Employees

Our health information (HI) professionals are super!

You’ve heard the expression, “Not all superheroes wear capes.”

This directly applies to DataGen’s team of experts, who work tirelessly to help clients with our HIM medical coding solution and SPARCS submission tool, UDS (UIS Data System™).

For the past two years, we’ve celebrated members of our top-notch team during the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA’s) Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week, which occurs every April.

“The meticulous work of UDS team members in troubleshooting and enhancing the flow of health information within New York State directly contributes to improved patient care and organizational efficiency,” says Kevin Tedesco, senior director, advanced analytics, DataGen. “Their efforts ensure that high-quality data is captured and utilized for trending illness, setting payment rates, addressing community health needs and ensuring the quality healthcare provided within our state is accurately represented for each facility.”

This year we’re celebrating:

  • Tammy Piusienski, Senior Consultant, DataGen.

  • Tim McGrath, SPARCS Coordinator and Sales Support, DataGen.

  • Alisha Zink, Manager, Technical Support, DataGen.

Keep reading to learn more about them and past year’s standouts.

HIP Week 2025 Nominees

Tammy Piusienski

Tammy Piusienski

As DataGen’s senior consultant, Tammy Piusienski thrives on curiosity, adaptability and a passion for solving complex challenges. As one of our dedicated team members, they share how the ever-changing nature of their work — and the satisfaction of cracking tough problems — fuels their enthusiasm every day:

“Something I like about my job is that it’s different every day. Even when I think I may have my day planned with certain scheduled tasks, it can change by the hour as clients need assistance with, or just have questions about, the UDS and Clintegrity software” Tammy says. “My favorite thing about the work I do is using problem solving skills to determine the root cause of a challenging problem and then to resolve it. I love puzzles!”

Tim McGrath

Tim McGrath

Tim McGrath, SPARCS coordinator and sales support, plays a key role in helping healthcare organizations across New York state navigate the complexities of SPARCS reporting with confidence.

“I enjoy working closely with clients to assure their data is error free and that they maintain their compliance,” shares Tim.

His expertise and dedication support the success of our SPARCS Submission Tool, which is trusted by over 130 hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers to ensure accurate, automated and compliant data submissions. Tim’s behind-the-scenes work helps make it all possible and we’re grateful to have him on the team.

Alisha Zink

Alisha Zink

Supporting our clients goes beyond providing great tools: It’s about delivering personalized service every step of the way. With our SPARCS submission tool, we help healthcare organizations stay compliant and efficient, even as regulations evolve.

Alisha Zink, Technical Support Manager, captures this commitment simply but powerfully: “I take pride in assisting our clients to overcome their challenges.”

HIP Week 2024

Here are DataGen's HIP Week 2024 standouts from 2024: Andrea Veldman, senior documentation specialist, Mike Yanni, HIM director, and SPARCSY, mascot and trusted data cruncher.

Andrea Veldman

Andrea Veldman

As a Senior Documentation Specialist, Andrea Veldman plays a vital role in keeping health information management (HIM) professionals up to date with the latest SPARCS regulatory changes. She ensures that DataGen’s UDS applications reflect the most recent edits — sometimes involving thousands of codes! — so users can stay compliant and confident in their submissions.

Mike Yanni

Mike Yanni
With decades of experience in hospital and ASC SPARCS functionality, Mike Yanni, HIM director, has been a trusted resource for HIM professionals. His deep expertise has helped countless users navigate challenges related to coding, technology and Department of Health (DOH) requirements.

SPARCSY

SPARCSY

As the mastermind behind DataGen's SPARCS submission tool, SPARCSY, the SPARCS UDS mascot, works tirelessly to support over 130 New York State hospitals and ASCs with fully automated and accurate SPARCS data. Their favorite pastime?

“Eliminating the time-wasting tasks that often burden HIM professionals during the SPARCS submission process,” says SPARCSY.

Fun fact: SPARCSY is so popular in New York state that he’s started selling his own toy-version of himself (yes, he does drink iced coffee to make sure all his clients have 100% accurate SPARCS data).

101 Guide: Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI)

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, quality assessment and performance improvement (QAPI) are crucial. These practices are essential for healthcare organizations that aim to enhance patient care while meeting regulatory and payer expectations.   That’s why we sat down with Mandi Diamond, senior practice transformation advisor at DataGen, to discuss the nuances. Read on for essential information on QAPI and how to measure your quality data.  What is quality assessment and performance improvement?  Defining quality assessment  The National Institutes of Health (NIH)  defines quality assessment (QA) as "the measurement of the technical and interpersonal aspects of health care and the outcomes of that care."   Diamond expands upon that definition, describing QA as the systematic evaluation of outcomes within an organization to measure the success of essential workflows.  Both definitions touch on the use of repeatable and systematic...

Five key components of a strong patient safety culture

In today’s healthcare environment, ensuring patient safety is more than just a priority — it’s a fundamental component of quality care.
